History

The Story of Our Church Family

Open Bible Baptist Church was founded and named in May 1976 by Rev. Dr. Ernest Flowers, Sr.; being guided by the Holy Spirit and inspired by Revelation 3:8, “I have set before thee an open door and no man can shut it.”

Holding steadfast to God’s call to the Pastoral Ministry, Dr. Flowers obtained the first building at 1226 N. Bradford Street in East Baltimore; and the first worship service was held on May 16, 1976. Dr. Flowers’ family; His wife, Lucy Marie Flowers, his son, Ernest Flowers, Jr. and his daughter, Cynthia Flowers were the first members.

As the membership increased, OBBC relocated at the Baltimore Rescue Mission, 4 N. Central Avenue. The congregation held their first worship service on January 22, 1978. Open Bible Baptist Church moved to 5718 Bowleys Lane on October 7, 1984 where the first Worship & Communion Services was held.

Rev. Dr. Ernest Flowers, Sr., is a renowned Greek Scholar; and after teaching at the Baltimore School of the Bible for 30 years, being Pastor of Open Bible Baptist Church for 35 years, and conducting various seminars at the Baptist Sunday School Convention, Dr. Flowers decided to retire from the Pastoral Ministry in November 2012.

On the First Sunday of November 2012, Pastor Kevin D. English, Sr. of New Joy Church & Ministries in Baltimore, MD became Pastor of OBBC. In December 2012, the congregation of New Joy was combined with the congregation of Open Bible to form the current membership.

Pastor English was officially installed as Pastor on March 10, 2013 and he expresses a high priority for Evangelism and Outreach Ministries. Under the leadership of Pastor English Open Bible relocated to its current location 3902 W. Overlea Avenue, Baltimore, MD 21206 in October 2017.

Open Bible Baptist Church is committed to a balanced ministry, which emphasizes four priorities: Celebration, Caring, Cultivation and Communication. We celebrate in worship, we care for one another, We cultivate the fullest spiritual life possible both individually and corporately and we communicate God’s truth at every opportunity.

1 Corinthians 2:9 “But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God has prepared for them that love him”

While the history of our church is rich, we believe that the future is richer. Let’s discuss some ways you can help ensure that the future of our church is bright.
